Title: Speaker Profile

Shawn Tomlinson

Shawn Tomlinson Photo I’m a mum of 4 sometimes lovely teenagers, my birth place was in the wonderful country of Brazil. My faith impacts my life daily and the Birthlight ethos is a way of life.

I grew up in the water, swimming and pretending to be a mermaid and after growing up, travelling and meeting my husband, we spent 6 years working in Tanzania, where I spent my days living and working with tribal women and learning their methods of childcare.

Upon returning to this country, I returned to my first love, the water, first as a canoe instructor, lifeguard and then a swimming teacher. I trained as a conventional ASA teacher (Adult and Child) and as a teacher for swimmers with disabilities. I soon came to realise that my roots took me deeper into the water, than standing on the side, and I went on to train at Diploma level with Steven Shaw, in the art of swimming with the Alexander technique. Through Steven’s work I came across the wonderful work of Françoise Freedman and knew immediately that my heart lay in the Amazon and within the parameters of her teaching methods. A succession of Diplomas followed, after much hard work, in Infant Aquatics, Baby Yoga and Aqua Yoga, all three of which I now tutor at foundation and diploma level.

The following year saw me train with a wonderful man called Jun Konno in Ai Chi, the art of tai chi in the water, an amazing therapy for all ages.

My next adventure led me to consolidate my learning by taking an Open University unit in Child Psychology followed by a post grad equivalent at The Institute of Neuro Physiological Phychology at Chester.

I qualified as a Neuro developmental delay Therapist and have integrated this work into my water and land based practices.

I love my work and I have been blessed with a kindred spirit working partner, Julia. deLucchi and this year has seen the expansion of our swim school and land classes. As our respective families wait to finalise our adoption process from China, Julia and I took Birthlight to China into foster care homes and orphan care providers, Birthlight in China Blog.

So life is never dull and we can’t wait for this following year. As we forward the Birthlight approach and aim to impact families and help them to begin their own adventures be it on land and or in the water we wish you all peace and fulfillment.
