Janet Balaskas

Janet Balaskas Photo "The concept of 'active birth ' is a milestone in the history of childbirth. Bringing together these two simple words is by itself a work of genius..."

Michel Odent (introduction to ' New Active Birth')

Janet Balaskas is a world renowned authority on natural childbirth.

She began her career in the late 1970's and has since inspired many thousands of women, their babies and partners to have a wonderful and empowered experience of birth.

Famous for coining the phrase and introducing the concept of 'Active Birth' in the early 1980's, her work began by liberating women from giving birth in the supine position.

Janet's teaching about pregnancy, birth and parenting continues to influence reform in maternity practises worldwide. Her approach to childbirth education is revolutionary and her ground breaking methods are widely influential and inspirational.

Her work as an activist and international speaker highlights the significance of pregnancy, birth and infancy in the greatest challenges of our times - to develop our capacity for love and peace as humans and to preserve the natural world we live in.

Janet currently lives and works in North London where she is the director of the Active Birth Centre.
