Title: Birthlight Trust Overview

Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga

The Birthlight adaptation of classic yoga practices (posture work, body movement, breathing, relaxation, chanting) for pregnancy and childbirth has pioneered the current popularity of Prenatal Yoga classes in the UK and abroad.

Françoise Freedman has trained the majority of Yoga teachers offering this specialty after she started the Yoga Biomedical Trust’s Pregnancy and Childbirth Yoga Therapy Training Programme in 1995. She is the author of five books on the subject. Birthlight tutors are also the authors of books and videos in their own right.

Besides specially designed exercise sequences for each stage of pregnancy and for alleviating common ailments, classes impart breathing and relaxation skills that are also beneficial to babies long before they are born.

The Birthlight adapted Pre & Postnatal Yoga is safe and accessible to all women, whether they are new to Yoga or experienced practitioners. Mothers to be and in some classes, couples, get practical support to prepare for labour but most of all the emphasis is on preventive care and laying the best possible foundation in the transition to parenthood.

Each birth is unique and at Birthlight we strive to give special attention to each new mother, whether she is having her first baby or she is a busy mother already.

Postnatal Yoga helps women tone their bodies back to shape in depth, using deep breathing in supported postures for the first three months. It is an ideal practice to integrate the experience of pregnancy and birth in order to create a new basis for well being.
